Two more months in Korea means two more months of delicious food to introduce to you guys!
The Korean peninsula has so many delicious foods to offer, let’s take a look at a few of them.
Hotteok (호떡)- a famous fried street food that consists of a soft, chewy bread wrapped around a spoonful of brown sugar and honey. There are regional variations of this dish, and the one you’re seeing is Ssiat Hotteok most commonly seen in the seaside city of Busan. Ssiat Hotteok includes various kinds of seeds as well as the brown sugar filling. There are some less common types of Hotteok, like one less traditional kind that is filled with sweet potato noodles.
NaengMyeon(냉면)- this is a type of noodle dish that is served cold rather than hot. It is very refreshing on a hot summer day as the broth usually comes with ice cubes still intact. The noodles -similar to soba noodles, but chewier- are placed in the center with various toppings including Korean pear, beef, and boiled egg topping them off. Naengmyeon noodle are often served with a pair of scissors so you can cut any noodles that may be too difficult to eat
Pizza!- Korea loves pizza, there’s no doubt about that. This is a special pizza topping commonly found in Korea and not many other places. It consists of grilled corn, shrimp, spicy seasoning, and occasionally crunchy rice cakes.
Bingsu (빙수)- this dessert has similar variations across many cultures, as it is Korea’s version of shaved ice. Traditionally served with a topping of red bean paste (a sweet bean filling common across many Asian cultures), today you can find many types of Bingsu including strawberry, mango, grape, and a mixed variety. It has a sweet milky flavor and goes well with lots of fruit and ice cream.
Hot Pot- though this style of hotpot is actually a Chinese invention, there are many varieties of hotpot across the country. This is HaidiLao, one of the most popular hotpot chains around the world. To eat this dish, you choose a combination of broth types, which boil at the table in front of you. You can then choose whichever ingredients you want and cook them yourself within the broth. Some of the unique dishes shown here are duck throat, quail eggs, tofu fortune bags, stir fried bean rolls, and various types of meat. One special thing about hotpot that I enjoy is the Sichuan peppercorn broth. Instead of being spicy, sichuan peppercorn brings a numbing feeling to your mouth, super unique.
Last but not least, convenience store food! Something really impressive about South Korea is the quality of their convenience store meals, pictured here. For around 5,000 won (roughly $3.63) you can get a relatively good quality home-style meal. This meal includes purple rice, a fried egg, spam, tofu pieces, spicy meat, kimchi, a meatball, and a Korean pancake.
Of course there are many more amazing Korean foods to explore, and I hope this post inspires you to check out some of them. If you want to look further into Korean cuisine, some easy dishes to make are Bibimbap, Japchae, Kimchi Jjigae (kimchi soup). I will link some of the recipes below from my favorite source for Korean foods, Maangchi.
